Toyota is preparing to give its China-focused electric SUV a significant first-year update. FAW Toyota will launch the 2027 Toyota bZ5 on August 26, 2026, bringing the first annual refresh to the all-electric coupe-style SUV since it arrived in the Chinese market in 2025.
The joint venture has confirmed the launch date but has not yet revealed the new model’s pricing or complete technical specifications. Based on the information released so far, Toyota appears to be keeping the bZ5’s familiar exterior while concentrating on technology and equipment improvements.
The update comes as competition in China’s electric vehicle market continues to intensify, particularly in the price range where domestic manufacturers offer increasingly sophisticated technology.
Launch Date
FAW Toyota announced the 2027 bZ5 launch on Weibo on August 25, confirming that the updated SUV will make its debut the following day.
The company has not yet disclosed whether every version of the existing lineup will continue into the 2027 model year.
The current bZ5 is offered in six configurations, with prices ranging from 129,800 yuan to 199,800 yuan. Whether Toyota keeps those prices or adjusts them for the updated model will be one of the key details to watch at launch.
Familiar Design
The 2027 bZ5 is not expected to receive a dramatic visual redesign.
Official images show that Toyota has retained the model’s recognizable closed front end, boomerang-shaped lighting elements and full-width light bars at both ends.
The overall coupe-SUV silhouette also remains familiar.
The current bZ5 measures 4,780 mm long, 1,866 mm wide and 1,510 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,880 mm. There is no indication so far that the facelift will bring major changes to these dimensions.
That suggests Toyota is treating the 2027 version as a technology-focused annual update rather than a complete redesign.
Cabin Tech
The interior is similarly expected to retain its basic layout.
The current bZ5 features a large 15.6-inch central touchscreen positioned above the center console, accompanied by a narrow digital instrument display.
Toyota has not confirmed every interior change for the 2027 model, but the unchanged exterior and familiar dashboard suggest that the company is likely concentrating on software, driver assistance and equipment rather than redesigning the cabin from the ground up.
For Chinese EV buyers, those areas have become increasingly important purchasing factors.
Smarter Driving
Driver assistance could be one of the most important parts of the refresh.
The existing bZ5 uses Toyota Pilot, a system combining Momenta 5.0 technology with Toyota Safety Sense.
The setup provides more than 30 driver-assistance functions, including navigation-assisted driving for city and highway environments and automated parking assistance.
The 2027 model is expected to improve these capabilities, although FAW Toyota has yet to provide the full list of changes.
If Toyota upgrades the system’s software or expands its assisted-driving functions, the bZ5 could become more competitive against Chinese electric SUVs that have made advanced driver assistance a major selling point.
Battery Setup
The current bZ5 uses a front-mounted single electric motor producing up to 200 kW.
Its battery technology is also notable because the SUV uses lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by BYD.
Two battery capacities are currently available: 65.28 kWh and 73.98 kWh.
Under China’s CLTC testing standard, they provide claimed ranges of 550 km and 630 km, respectively.
Toyota has not confirmed whether the 2027 bZ5 will receive a larger battery, improved efficiency or revised charging performance.
Any improvement in those areas would strengthen the model’s appeal in a market where range and charging speed are closely watched by consumers.
China Strategy
The bZ5 represents an important part of Toyota’s attempt to adapt to China’s rapidly changing EV market.
The SUV launched in China in June 2025, entering a market dominated by local manufacturers offering aggressive pricing, advanced infotainment and increasingly sophisticated driver-assistance technology.
Toyota’s traditional strengths in reliability and manufacturing are valuable, but the Chinese EV market demands a faster technology cycle than the company has historically followed in many global markets.
Updating the bZ5 after its first year therefore carries strategic importance.
Pricing Matters
Price could ultimately determine how successful the refreshed model becomes.
The existing bZ5 starts at 129,800 yuan, with the highest-priced version reaching 199,800 yuan.
That places it directly against a wide selection of Chinese electric SUVs and crossover models.
If Toyota introduces meaningful technology upgrades without substantially increasing prices, the refreshed bZ5 could become a stronger value proposition.
Conversely, a significant price increase could make it harder for the vehicle to stand out in an intensely competitive segment.
